Extreme solar bursts threaten life in this corner of the solar system

Grew tired working on this, started out, as so many times before, as a practice piece - but got stuck on several elements over the course of time... Not too sure about the final result.

Baseplanet: *freelancah
Satelite mesh: NASA (textured and rendered in VUE).
Original size: 3840x2400
Wallpaper resolution: 1920x1200

Do you mind telling me what program you use to draw these amazing amazing pieces of art.

Sure :)

Apopysis and Photoshop for the background and the sun.
Terrragen for the close up planet (not made by me)
Photoshop for the moon
Vue for the satelite (prerendered in some 3d program, probably 3smax, by NASA).
Photoshop for final touchups.

Thanks! :)

Would unfortunatly be a very messy tutorial. 3 programs used (Apophysis, Vue and obviously Photoshop) by me, and *Smattila made the planet in yet another program; terragen. And my creation process is extremely chaotic and messy, doubt anyone would learn much from following it, heh :P

Actually this is a highly probable event. The older a star is, the hotter it gets. And eventually the Sun will go super nova and obliterate the first few planets (including the Earth).

Woah! Awesome :) I think there is something wrong with the sun though. I see three colors - white, light blue and dark blue (sunspots?). The dark blue colors make the sun lose its warmth and look unrealistic. I think there are two ways you can improve it - either Desaturate the sunspots or completely erase them. ;) Great work overall. *_*
